Summary

Three dark and disturbing horror stories from an astonishing new voice, including the viral-sensation tale of obsession, Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke。 For fans of Kathe Koja, Clive Barker and Stephen Graham Jones。

A whirlpool of darkness churns at the heart of a macabre ballet between two lonely young women in an internet chat room in the early 2000s—a darkness that threatens to forever transform them once they finally succumb to their most horrific desires。

A couple isolate themselves on a remote island, in an attempt to recover from their teenage son’s death, when a mysterious young man knocks on their door during a storm…

And a man confronts his neighbour when he discovers a strange object in his back yard, only to be drawn into an ever-more dangerous game。

From Bram Stoker Award® finalist Eric LaRocca, this is devastating, beautifully written horror from one of the genre’s most cutting-edge voices。

This horror is the helplessness of it, the lack of control, and the realization that nothing the individual does will make any kind of difference。 That chilling feeling lingers, as it does in all good horror stories。 。。。more

Yeah I’m sorry but no。 I’ve only read the first story Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke so I will be basing my review purely off of that。 My main issue with this is how it feels like an excuse just to be a gross out story。 There is no character build up, the plot is rushed and the characters are all unrealistic。 I mean this all unfolds after DAYS of the characters speaking with each other? I really just don’t think that’s feasible no matter how dire the circumstances were for the main character。 The only reason this still receives 2 stars is that I enjoyed my time reading the story and believe that if it was much longer and more built up there could potentially be a good story there。 I also very much disliked the chat room scenes as the dialogue, although fitting for a chat room, is not enjoyable to read。 The covers are the best part of these books。 Both the original and this edition have gorgeous covers which was the main reason for me blindly buying this book。 。。。more

*2。5 stars*Oh man。 Where do I even start with this? To break it down by story:Things have bottom worse since we last spoke- 2。5 stars。 I like the format and some of the story was decent but then all of a sudden, no。 This is not my kind of horror。 There was just such gross representation of mental health and I can’t see last that。 I’m really suppose to buy that a women who just started taking to someone literally 15-20 messages ago is all of a sudden so into her that she’ll sign a slave contract? *2。5 stars*Oh man。 Where do I even start with this? What the actual * no。 Then maybe 50 messages and half a dozen IM sessions later she’s so desperate to have this woman’s baby that she eats big infested meat to feel the “power” of life inside her? Absolutely not。 This woman is either mentally ill in which case this is such a gross way to write about mental illness or she’s sane in which case this story is a million percent unbelievable。 I get it。 It’s fiction but come on。 If I can’t believe it at all horror isn’t horror。 The enchantment- DNF I could tell early on I was going to hate this as much as the first story。 You’ll find it’s like that all over- 4 stars。 This was solid, fun horror。 I really enjoyed reading this one and the ending had my jaw on the floor。 Based on the fact that I enjoyed 25 pages of this book I think it’s safe to say this author isn’t for me。 I love horror books and I love being left asking “what the * did I just read?!” but this had me asking that for ALL the wrong reasons。 It’s a no for me。 。。。more

I loved the first short story so much: it was dark, mysterious, and very effectively told。 I read it in the airport and literally could not put the book down! It was so well done and well developed。 The second short story was fine, good even, especially the opening。 It didn’t feel as well developed or thought out as the first one though。 The final story was simply too short to really care about, and it seemed very much like an afterthought。 Honestly, if it had just been the first short story thi I loved the first short story so much: it was dark, mysterious, and very effectively told。 I read it in the airport and literally could not put the book down! A very good collection of stories, each with their own unique yet horrific flavor。 Though there have been books more terrifying, and some that have been more grotesque, this collection still itches all of your favorite horror spots。 The initial story is a 'terrible' love story about devotion, commitment, and the desire to please。 It does a great job of story telling with limited content, so even if the story is only a hundred pages or so, it still comes across as satisfying and disgusting。 Great A very good collection of stories, each with their own unique yet horrific flavor。 Though there have been books more terrifying, and some that have been more grotesque, this collection still itches all of your favorite horror spots。 The initial story is a 'terrible' love story about devotion, commitment, and the desire to please。 It does a great job of story telling with limited content, so even if the story is only a hundred pages or so, it still comes across as satisfying and disgusting。 Great body horror and descriptive imagery。 The second story, though it has its scary elements, is more so a depressing look at people come to terms with mortality and what the afterlife truly has to offer。 A sadder tone, but still pretty horrifying events。 The third story is reminiscent of a childhood campfire story。 It's charming, well developed despite its length, and surprisingly the most suspenseful story! Though the first may be shocking and gross, it pales in comparison as to how gripped the third story had me。 Not to say that any one of the stories in this book are bad, they are all unique and horrifying in their own special way! 。。。more

This is the perfect amount of creepy and "what just happened?" to kick off spooky season reading。 LaRocca's stories in this collection each leave the reader enough scope for the imagination to scare oneself even more。 This is the perfect amount of creepy and "what just happened?" to kick off spooky season reading。 LaRocca's stories in this collection each leave the reader enough scope for the imagination to scare oneself even more。 。。。more

A quick read easily managed in a day。 A few short stories。 I would necessarily have put this into horror category。 Shocking, yes。 Suspenseful, yes。 Eerie and very odd, yes。 There were horrific parts to it but I wouldn't call it an outright gore。 Would have loved if the stories had anything to do with the other。 A quick read easily managed in a day。 A few short stories。 I would necessarily have put this into horror category。 Shocking, yes。 Suspenseful, yes。 Eerie and very odd, yes。 There were horrific parts to it but I wouldn't call it an outright gore。 Would have loved if the stories had anything to do with the other。 。。。more

It’s rare for me to finish a book in a single day anymore。 Blame it on television, social media, whatever。 I tend to hit a point where the story lulls and I am able to pull myself back into reality, breaking the spell that I was in。 Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke was one of those rare stories that I couldn’t walk away from。 I have heard nothing but great things about Eric LaRocca over the past few years but have yet to encounter his books in the wild。 Luckily, this was reprinted as It’s rare for me to finish a book in a single day anymore。 Blame it on television, social media, whatever。 I tend to hit a point where the story lulls and I am able to pull myself back into reality, breaking the spell that I was in。 Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke was one of those rare stories that I couldn’t walk away from。 I have heard nothing but great things about Eric LaRocca over the past few years but have yet to encounter his books in the wild。 Luckily, this was reprinted as a collection recently and I was overjoyed to find it on my local bookstore shelf。 These stories are both terrifying and innately human, an examination of our fears as much as an examination of ourselves。 These are journeys into the darkness where the author doesn’t give you a path back out。 These are the stories every author dreams of writing, because they haunt you long after the final punctuation。 。。。more

I used the average of stars for the three stories:Things have gotten worse: 3 stars。 I did enjoy this story and think it could’ve been great, but it seemed underdeveloped and too short。 If the plot was expanded upon it would’ve had a higher rating Enchantment: 4 stars。 This story saved it。 I loved all of it and will be re-reading。 The plot twist got me (I gasped) and I thought it was executed wellYou’ll find it’s like that all over: 2 stars。 It was fine, super short so not much to review cuz it I used the average of stars for the three stories:Things have gotten worse: 3 stars。 I did enjoy this story and think it could’ve been great, but it seemed underdeveloped and too short。 If the plot was expanded upon it would’ve had a higher rating Enchantment: 4 stars。 This story saved it。 I loved all of it and will be re-reading。 The plot twist got me (I gasped) and I thought it was executed wellYou’ll find it’s like that all over: 2 stars。 It was fine, super short so not much to review cuz it didn’t really stick with me。 。。。more

Finally, LaRocca's 'Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke' is back in print, and with 2 new stories included。 The two added stories blended well with THGWSWLS, as there is an underlying theme for each story。 All three stories in this book are fantastic, but I especially enjoyed 'The Enchantment' as it is a fascinating and heartbreaking story that will definitely stick with me for a long time。 Finally, LaRocca's 'Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke' is back in print, and with 2 new stories included。 The two added stories blended well with THGWSWLS, as there is an underlying theme for each story。 All three stories in this book are fantastic, but I especially enjoyed 'The Enchantment' as it is a fascinating and heartbreaking story that will definitely stick with me for a long time。 。。。more

That was…fine? Every story needed like 50+ more pages to actually explain why anyone was doing what they were doing but it was weird and quick so not too bad

I sent a DM to Eric about this exact thing a couple days ago when I was about halfway through the text, but - it’s the religious imagery for ME。 I’m absolutely floored by this remarkable commentary on the fundamental human desire to connect with something or someone outside of ourself。 WAH。 I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying!!

I adored this book。 The first story, Things Have Gotten Worse。。。 was one of the most truly deranged and disturbing things I've ever read。 Whatever I thought this was going to be。。。that wasn't it。 It was unhinged and disgusting and shocking and left me wanting to cry and throw up, but in the best way。 The second and third stories were entertaining, though not overly disturbing or scary。 I really enjoyed the second one。 It was very atmospheric and the setting was cool。 The concept was interesting I adored this book。 The first story, Things Have Gotten Worse。。。 was one of the most truly deranged and disturbing things I've ever read。 Whatever I thought this was going to be。。。that wasn't it。 It was unhinged and disgusting and shocking and left me wanting to cry and throw up, but in the best way。 The second and third stories were entertaining, though not overly disturbing or scary。 I really enjoyed the second one。 It was very atmospheric and the setting was cool。 The concept was interesting although the execution was maybe a little confusing at moments。 I'll definitely want to reread it at some point。 Third one was thrilling and fun, though maybe a little underdeveloped。。。I would have liked it to be a little longer。I wouldn't describe this collection as scary, especially since I read them alone at night, and honestly didn't feel spooked the way I normally do while reading horror/thrillers。 That being said, they were disturbing and unsettling in a way that felt impersonal but psychologically upsetting。Overall, I really loved these stories and found the book near impossible to put down。 It was like the classic, metaphorical train wreck: I couldn't tear my eyes away。 It's been a while since a book felt so addictive like that。If you're into the horror genre, I'd definitely recommend this。 。。。more

You see… I have an English degree… I consider myself pretty literary inept。 I love figurative language! I love breaking down texts and figuring out allegories。 However, each short story went over my head。 I was following… up until each end。 Please tell me I’m not alone in this? Very strange book。

This was an。。。unsettling read。 The characters were way too flushed out for my taste, but if that was done intentionally to perceive them as ourselves or people we know, willing to do anything to feel the connected to others no matter how depraved and off-base they may be, then I am OK with it。 Lots of trigger warnings。 Definitely not for everyone。

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, the story, is a 4 star read for me。 I’ve read it multiple times and every time I do I enjoy it。 Unfortunately, the other 2 other stories in this collection (which I was anticipating the most), The Enchantment and You’ll Find It’s Like That All Over were really… not good。 The writing was underwhelming and not what I have come to expect from this author。 The stories themselves lacked logic and fell flat for me。 Both 1 star。 I’m so sad!! I didn't love nor hate this book。 I finished it in one day, and it kept me engaged from start to finish, but I wouldn't say any of the stories have really stuck with me。 The titular story managed to make me feel physically ill, and I loved the unique storytelling device, but the rest of it didn't really do anything for me。 I despised how they wrote their emails and how quickly the relationship between Zoe and Agnes developed。 I found that Agnes had far better character development, but neither h I didn't love nor hate this book。 I finished it in one day, and it kept me engaged from start to finish, but I wouldn't say any of the stories have really stuck with me。 The titular story managed to make me feel physically ill, and I loved the unique storytelling device, but the rest of it didn't really do anything for me。 I despised how they wrote their emails and how quickly the relationship between Zoe and Agnes developed。 I found that Agnes had far better character development, but neither had enough to completely flesh them out。 I also agree with the criticisms that this story is trauma porn and does not accurately represent sapphic or BDSM relationships。The Enchantment was actually my favourite of the bunch once I got past the ridiculous self-crucifixion at the start (???)。 I loved the setting for this short story and the twist, but similarly to the former, there wasn't much character development。 Additionally, the themes kind of get lost amongst the chaos。 The 'young man' was the character that interested me the most, and as someone who has walked away from religion, I enjoyed how the author explored what it means to lose faith。 I think the ending could have been more clear, though。I really didn't like the final story in this book。 While I understood the message clearly, a lot of it is just too ridiculous。 。。。more

I’m by no means a literary critic。 I’m just a person who read a book。 However, I didn’t care for the titular story when I first finished it, but after taking some time to think it through, It’s grown on me。 (So to speak)。 It really is just about the very human desperation for deep connection。 It read well, I finished it in a couple days。 But it left me wanting something more。 Maybe that’s the point? this was really good! ive obviously already read Things Have Gotten Worse when it was just a single ebook, but it was nice to read it again in physical form this time。 The Enchantment is a haunting tale of motherhood, desperation, and faith, and it was incredible。 You’ll Find It’s Like That All Over was only 20-30 pages and i think it was too short for its own good, but it still had some nice things to say。 overall this was a 4。5/5 rounded up。 a creepy-crawly little collection。
